Really proud to announce that the Mission Songs Project will open the concert at Thornbury Theatre on Saturday Dec 5.
Curated by Jessie Lloyd, Mission Songs Project is a unique performance of Indigenous Australian songs that were composed and performed from 1900 to 1970, focusing on the Christian missions, Aboriginal reserves and the fringes of township were Indigenous people were relocated.
Jessie Lloyd presents this performance as a vocal quartet, featuring Tiriki Onus, John Wayne Parsons and Monica Weightman with accompaniment by Robert Champion on acoustic guitar. These songs, some largely hidden from the outside world, offer a unique window about life on the missions and native camps. Staying true to the style and feel of the era, the repertoire consists of rare, almost forgotten songs that shed light into the history of Indigenous communities.
Mission Songs Project faithfully explores the musical journey of Indigenous music as Jessie Lloyd connects the traditional with contemporary and reveals the continuation of cultural practice into the twenty first century.
